I have some positive news to share with you today. Technology has changed how we do things in almost every subject imaginable. And theres continuous research on diabetes.
Now, depending on the results of in-home testing, Type I diabetics may be able to take a back seat to technology in monitoring and administering Insulin.
This technology is basically an artificial pancreas. The user wears an Insulin pump and a sensor to monitor blood sugar continually. This sensor communicates wirelessly to the users smart phone to calculate the needed amount of Insulin to be delivered automatically by the Insulin pump.
Type 1 Diabetes is typically found in children and young adults. It has also been called juvenile diabetes. The common treatment for type 1 diabetes mellitus is daily insulin injections to replace the insulin the body is not producing properly, along with careful blood sugar monitoring.
This monitoring must be done at meal times, with exercise, and during periods of stress. So, its really a never ending process. The advent of the artificial pancreas can help improve quality of life for Type I diabetics.
In-hospital testing has already taken place in Virginia. This system was developed at the University of Virginia. It is expected that in-home testing will be done in 2014 depending on fund raising efforts.
Similar testing has taken place in U.K. with teens wearing similar devices for several weeks.
