Plan Your Diet in Accordance with the Diabetes Food Pyramid

The diabetes food pyramid is a food chart given out for diabetic patients, to ensure that they eat a balanced and nutritional diet. It tells them what to eat, and in how big a quantity. The chart lists what should be eaten more, and what should be avoided. This diabetic food chart was designed by the American Diabetes Association and American Diatec Association. In this chart, all the foods are grouped together depending on the main factor of how they will affect the blood glucose level. It is called a pyramid, because it puts the food groups in a reverse hierarchical order, that is, the food types that are most helpful and recommended to diabetic patients come in the lowest order and consist of the major amount in proportion to their diet. The other food types, which should be eaten in lesser quantities are put above them, and so on, with the food type that should be consumed the least being at the top.

First Position

At the lowest position in the diabetes food pyramid, we have wheat breads, grains, pulses and other starchy food materials. They should amount to a major portion in the patients diet. They are considered to be the healthiest food items that should be mostly eaten by diabetic people. Its health benefits include controlled sugar level and blood pressure maintenance. These foods have less fat and sugar, hence they should be included specifically in the diet chart.

Second Position

Above the pulses, breads, grains, etc. we have fruits and vegetables. These should be consumed enough to form the second major source of the patients caloric intake. However, the fruits that have higher levels of sugar, like bananas and mangoes should be strictly avoided. The fruits and vegetables that have less sugar content should be included in the patients diet.

Third Position

Milk and milk products such as yogurt, cheeses, butter, meat, fish and eggs make up the third level, suggesting that they should be eaten but their intake should not be as much of the patients diet as levels one and two. These products have a good amount of calories and thus should not be included in daily diet chart.

Fourth Position

At the topmost level stand fats, oils and sweets. These are the substances that should not be consumed too often in large quantities. They should be used as minimally as possible.

The diabetes food pyramid also tells you the quantity of these food items to be consumed, and the number of servings that should be taken in. This chart gives you a healthy and nutritious meal plan. By following the diabetes food pyramid, one can ensure that they eat properly, in order to control diabetes. It is not only for the patients; even those who do not suffer from diabetes should follow this plan to reduce the risk of getting diabetes, or any other health problem. Not only will the diabetes food pyramid help you in avoiding, controlling and reducing the likelihood of developing diabetes, it will also help you to stay free from other diseases, as well.
