What is Diabetes Insipidus?
Diabetes Insipidus is a very rare condition. It is a disease in which the kidneys are not able to conserve water while filtering the blood in the body. This is because the pituitary gland in the body is not able to produce enough ADH hormones (Antidiuritic Hormone). This hormone is responsible for controlling the quantity of water in our bodies. This disease is very different from the commonly known sugar diabetes. Except for the name, these two diseases are seen as totally unrelated. But this disease is more dangerous than normal diabetes. If it is not treated properly, and in time, it can also prove fatal for the body.
The Causes of Diabetes Insipidus
Though medical experts have not been able to correctly diagnose the causes of this disease, they are clear about who may get it. People who have had brain tumors or tumors of the pituitary gland are highly susceptible to this disease. Also, people who may have had head injuries in the past, in which the pituitary gland may have been damaged also may get this disease. People who have had internal bleeding in the skull, or those who have had a medical history of this disease in their families are possibly susceptible to this disease. People who come under these conditions may be diagnosed with this disease.
Symptoms of Diabetes Insipidus
Before going for the treatment, one must be sure if they are suffering from the said disease. One must look for some symptoms which will help in self-diagnosis before going to a medical expert. The main symptom is frequently passing diluted urine. Sometimes, a person may not have control in their bladder, and may excrete urine in their sleep. Also, if it is combined with excessively dry hands, followed by constipation and an extreme desire for iced fluids, then the person may be a patient of this disease. They must immediately consult a doctor and get diagnosed if they suspect they have this disease.
Treatment for Diabetes Insipidus
A quick and effective Diabetes Insipidus treatment becomes extremely essential for the victims, because if not treated, this disease may prove fatal to the patient, in some cases. To treat Central Diabetes Insipidus (where the hormone ADH is not produced properly) the best way is to take Desmopressin a synthetic hormone. This helps in retaining water content in the kidneys, thus, curing the patient. But, the long term cure is to cure the basic condition which has resulted in this disease. In case of nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus, this synthetic hormone will not help. This is because here, the kidneys do not respond to the ADH hormone, even though it is produced in the right quantities. Doctors prescribe a low salt diet to control the amount of urine made by the kidneys, in order to control this disease.
Different kinds of Diabetes Insipidus have different kinds of treatments. In the long term, it is best to work on the root causes of this disease (as stated above) which counter the effects of the disease. That is the best long-term cure of this problem.
