The Deltec Cozmo Insulin Pump is no longer being manufactured by Smith’s Medical. As of March 25, 2009 these pumps have been discontinued and are no longer for sale. This was a business decision on Smith Medical’s part and not due to technical or safety issues with the pump.
Are you a Cosmo Pump User?
Smith Medical assures clients that the Cozmore Insulin Pump remains a safe, effective and user friendly choice if you currently have one.
The company reports that pump supplies will remain available and that they will honor all warranty obligations. If however, your pump is over warranty (usually 4 years) then it will not be serviced in the event of any malfunction. In that case, you would need to review options to purchase other types of insulin pumps. In Canada, supplies and servicing will continue to be done through Autocontrol Medical Canada, but again, no new sales of Deltec Cosmo Insulin Pumps will occur.
Keep in mind, that many pumps will function many years beyond their warranty, so potentially you may enjoy your Cozmo for years to come.
What about the Cleo infusion set?
The Cleo and Comfort infusion sets will continue to be manufactured, at least the next few years. They have said for the “warranty period” so I would expect for the next 4 years. It is Smith’s intention to eventually exit the diabetes market.
After that time frame, any luer lock infusion set can be used with Cozmo insulin pumps. This is reassuring of people with diabetes.
Smith’s Medical states if your pump is under warranty and it is necessary to replace your pump, it will be!
Were you considering a Cozmore?
Unfortunately, you will no longer be able to purchase the Cozmore or Cozmo (The Cozmore is simply the pump with the glucose meter attachment). Consider other types of insulin pumps.
